Instructions after Eyelid Surgery

What you must do once you're home:

  • Remove the dressing 2 hours after the surgery.
  • Apply antibiotic ointment to incisions and in your eye(s) 4 times daily as directed.
  • For the pain, you can take 1 or 2 Tylenol (acetaminophen) tablets of 325 mg every 4 hours, as needed. Please follow the recommendations on the bottle.
  • Try not to make any demanding efforts. No bending, heavy lifting or strenuous exercises. Try also not to touch anything that could be dirty (such as dirt) for 10 days following the surgery.

To reduce swelling you must...

  • Apply cold compresses after removing the dressing. Use a clean face cloth in a clean bowl with ice and water. You can also use a bag of frozen green peas. Place over the incision site for 10 minutes every hour for 48 hours (except during the night). After 48 hours, use hot compresses for the following days.
  • Sleep with your head elevated using 2-3 pillows for the first 2 days following the surgery.

Contact the surgeon or the nurse from the clinic if complications signs occur to your eye or eyelid, for example:

  • Any redness that is getting worse,
  • A progressive or any type of pain that is not solved with the medications,
  • An induration (a focus or region of abnormally hardened tissue) that aggravate or don't go away,
  • An excessive bleeding,
  • Any green, yellow or yellowish green liquid discharge coming out off your eye,
  • An oral temperature higher then 38,5°C (100°F),
  • A sudden decrease in vision,
  • Any other change that you might worry about.
